August 7, 2007
Starting July 1, 2007
all TEFAP agencies will have new distributors. The Care and Share Food Bank in Colorado Springs will be the warehouse storage location, and our distribution company for our commodities. In the past Andrews Produce in Pueblo stored and delivered the commodities.
I visited the Care and Share Food Bank in Colorado Springs on June 13th. Lori Kapu, Director of Operations & Agency Relations gave me the tour of the facility. It is a very large facility and they distributed over $9.9 million dollars worth of food in prior years. They are proposing to build a new facility which will double their capacity to store more food and therefore distribute more food to those in need. What all this means to Baca County is that we will be able to get other food items to supplement the commodities that we give away now. It is hoped that in the near future Care & Share will have a bi-monthly mobile drop to Baca County. These bi-monthly drops will probably not start until October or November, but we are excited that our community will be receiving other items as well as the regular commodities. Our next commodity giveaway will be August 25, 2007. I'm not sure of the location at this time. We will put an article on the website, in the paper, and on the cable to let people know where the giveaway will be. If you have any questions please call 529-0232 or 523-4372.
Thank you, Sheila Emick

UPDATE ON BACA COUNTY FOOD COMMODITIES The commodities will be distributed at the Blue Building at the Baca County Fairgrounds. Our first distribution will be the first part of May if all goes well. We will receive our first allotment from the Department of Agriculture in April sometime. I’m not sure of the date since this is our first time to be allocated commodities. We have had 132 families sign up so far for the commodities. Please get your forms in to us as soon as possible. If you want to receive the commodities there is a form that you must fill out. There are income restrictions and that information is on the form. The forms are available at the County Clerk's Office, 741 Main St., Springfield, CO., and also at the website address of http://oraflo.com (click on Baca County Food Commodity Program, and that link will take you to the information). We would like the forms filled out and back into the Clerk's office as soon as possible, so we will know approximately how many families will be receiving commodities, and then we can order the product accordingly. We have had a very good response for volunteers, we have approximately 20 so far. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please come by the Baca County Clerk's Office or call 523-4372 and let us know. Any of the staff that answers the telephone can take your name and give you any information you need concerning the commodities. We will need volunteers the day the commodities are delivered, and then the day we bag and distribute the product. We will probably receive the product on a Thursday and plan to distribute on Saturday of the same week. Starting out we will only receive dry products since we don't have freezers or coolers to store frozen or other food that needs refrigeration. As the program grows, we will be putting information in the newspapers and on the website at http://oraflo.com to keep the people of Baca County informed about what is going on. So watch the papers and website for new information. If you have any questions, please call 523-4372.

To Baca County Residents, From Sheila Emick:
We have been working on getting a food pantry and commodity program started in Baca County since Colorado residents are no longer elligible to receive Oklahoma commodities in Boise City. And since the right people were finally contacted in Denver with the USDA, we are now ready to start setting up our very own Food Pantry! I presented the information to the County Commissioners on February 18th at their regular meeting and they have approved my request that we start a food commodity program in Baca County. I will be administering and coordinating the program for Baca County, but this is something I will need help with, especially at election time. In the next few weeks we will be needing volunteers to help with unloading, bagging, and distributing the product. At the present we will be distributing once every three months. Since we missed the first distribution of the year in January, our first distribution will be sometime in the next couple of months. As the Baca County Food Commodity Program progresses and grows, we will make adjustments as needed. The Commissioners have agreed to let the Baca County Food Commodity Program use the Fairground facilities for the distribution and we will let you know at a later date which building will be used for distribution. If you want to receive the commodities there is a form that you must fill out. There are income restrictions (bring proof of income when you come to pick up a form) and that information is on the form. The forms will be available soon at the County Clerk's Office, 741 Main St., Springfield, CO., and also at the website address of http://oraflo.com and click on Baca County Food Commodity Program. We would like the forms filled out and back into the Clerk's office as soon as possible, so we will know what to order for the first distribution. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please come by the Baca County Clerk's Office or call me at 523-4372. We will need volunteers the day the commodities are delivered, and then the day we bag and distribute the product. Starting out we will only receive dry products since we don't have freezers or coolers to store frozen or other food that needs refrigeration. As the program grows, we will be putting information in the newspapers and on the Boogermania website at http://oraflo.com to keep the people of Baca County informed about what is going on. So watch the papers and website for new information. If you have any questions, please call me at 523-4372.
