MILTON AND JUANITA ROBBS AND FAMILY
STERLEY, TEXAS 1937-1943
After RL was born, Milt hired a girl to help in the laundry and to help in the home. This girl was Ann Gulliage and she was about twenty years old. Ann lasted on her job for only a few days. One evening after the work was done, she and Marie went into the bedroom in the front of the house. They locked the door so that Toots and Viola could not get in. The two younger sisters were suspicious so they went around the house and peeked through the window. The curtain was drawn, but they could see through the crack and there was Ann, teaching Marie how to smoke a cigarette! Toots and Viola lost no time in telling their mother what was going on and the parents broke up the little smoking party in short order. Milt gave Ann her wages and sent her packing. From Juanita, Marie received a talking-to that she never forgot. Marie has never smoked another cigarette since.

One summer day, Juanita Robbs had noticed that there was a package at the train station from her sister Gladys. She sent Marie and Viola to the depot to pick up the package. At the station they found that a new agent was on duty. Before the new agent would give the little girls their package, he picked them up and started kissing them. He kissed and kissed them and Marie and Viola left the station spitting and gagging in disgust. Over the next few days, they talked to all of the other little girls in town and found that the new station agent had behaved in the same way with the other little girls.

Viola and Marie and some of the other little girls decided that the agent deserved a good cussing. About six little girls went to the train station, they found the agent and several local men standing around shooting the breeze. The agent said “What can I do for you girls?”. All of the little girls suddenly froze, Viola realized that it was up to her. In a trembling voice she said :You b_______, you kissed me!” Then all of the little girls turned and ran out of the station. Within the hour, the news of this incident was all over town and the station agent was soon on his way out of town. Milt and Juanita were happy to know that the man had been exposed for what he was, but they were not happy to hear about their daughter’s language.
